. Original Title: Worm-cd caused Windows 8.1 Crash I upgraded my PC from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 about a month ago. It was going good. On June 13, 2014, I mistakenly inserted a worm-cd into the PC's burner & when I tried to access the cd in the Windows Explorer, the PC shut down. When I turned it back on, it proceeded to the screen - PCI Device Listing. (which usually was displayed when starting up) - and no further moved on to start up but showed a message - 'A disk read error occurred.

'A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart' appears on the screen in Windows XP/7/8/10? Try 7 methods to fix read disk error now! The message I get when I go to sign on is: A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. When I do this it just keeps coming back to that screen.
Press ctrl+alt+del to restart' - and when I hit those keys, it turns off, and turns back on, and comes back to the same screen. The PC never starts up.
I can't make a clean installation of Windows coz every partition of the hard disk has some valuable files including the Windows Drive. I kindly ask the Community to give me a fix. Hi, - What is the make and model of the computer? This issue could be hardware related. I would have you disconnect all the external devices (printers, scanner, USB (universal serial bus) drives, etc.) except mouse and the keyboard and then boot up to check the issue. You may check if the hard drive is set a first boot device in BIOS.
Note: Modifying BIOS/complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk. If the issue persists, I would suggest you to try performing automatic repair using Windows 8.8.1 disc from Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and check if it helps. Important: Make sure you have selected the hard disk as the first boot device in the BIOS. Perform the Automatic repair: a) When your computer starts, wait for the manufacturer logo to check the option for boot menu, it will usually be F12. B) The boot menu key might differ with each manufacturer.
If you are unable to find the boot menu key, you may refer the user manual. C) Restart the computer, when the manufacturer's logo is displayed, keep pressing the Boot menu option key to enter the boot menu and change the boot option to CD DVD ROM. D) After you boot your computer using Windows 8 DVD, a black screen appears with gray text ' Press any key to boot from CD or DVD'.
Press any key. E) Select the correct time and Keyboard type. F) Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner g) Click on Troubleshooting, advanced option and then click Automatic repair. Keep us posted on the status of the issue.
Sharief Khan Ex-Microsoft Forum Moderator. Hello sir, I disconnected all the external devices and booted up the PC. I mean this thing did not work. I tried that automatic repair thing just as you said. I turned the PC on, and as usual it went up to the PCI Device Listing screen which shows the error message.
I then inserted the Windows 8.1 disc, then restarted the PC. When the manufacturer's logo was displayed, I kept pressing the Boot menu option key. I could change the boot option to CD DVD ROM. But after that, the 'Press any key to boot from CD or DVD' thing did not appear in a black screen. It only appeared at the bottom of the PCI Device Listing screen. Nevertheless, I pressed a key, it took a few seconds and displayed the usual message 'A disk read error occurred. Press ctrl+alt+del to restart.'
Sir, I regret some not-clear-enough sentences in the previous version of this reply. It's an assembled PC.
Motherboard: Gigabyte Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo Hard disk Manufacturer: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 By the way, my friend checked the PC's hard disk for file system errors using Ubuntu operating system run from a pen drive. He says, it doesn't show 4 partitions (status before the crash was 4 partitions), it now only shows as single partition. What do to in this case? Can I seek help from the hard disk manufacturer?
